This image shows the inflorescence of Combretum bracteosum (hiccup-nut). Apart from Combretum microphyllum, this is the only other species of the roughly 23 species of Combretum in South Africa to have red flowers. Combretum bracteosum is also unusual in that it is the only species of Combretum to have a round nut as a fruit, all other species in our region bearing winged fruits. This is a coastal species with a distribution from East London in the south to Richard's Bay in the north.
