Xylotheca kraussiana, known as African dogrose, afrikahondroos in Afrikaans, and umbalekani in Zulu, is a shrub or small tree. It is prevalent throughout the eastern regions of Southern Africa, ranging from the coastal areas of KwaZulu-Natal to Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and extending to Mozambique, thriving in the sandy soils of coastal bushland and forests. The striking large white flowers are sweet scented and are most likely seen between August and February. The fruits are ribbed woody capsules ripening to yellow before splitting open exposing the black seeds partially covered with bright red arils. Seeds are eaten by birds, monkeys and people.
